Debates about the present and the future of rural areas often highlight the importance of village services and amenities for maintaining the quality of rural life. Small grocery stores, pubs, gyms, schools, post offices and similar facilities regularly come to the forefront of discussions about the desired form of rural development, particularly in two contexts. One of them is the perspective of spatial justice and territorial cohesion. The availability of basic services is considered an important aspect of a dignified life. Widening regional disparities in service accessibility are framed in terms of increasing inequalities and an unfair structure of access to opportunities. The second perspective is the issue of community life and local integration.
