Social work features with a number of tools how we can work with cause and consequences of social exclusion. The objective of the following text is to introduce a method used mainly within critical social work - "empowerment". It is a method of liberate education of people, including education towards both "awareness" of social oppression, and finding ways how to eliminate it. The aim of the chapter is to introduce the method "empowerment" in the concept of critical social work and to give examples of its use both in context of critical casework and within group and community social work. Firstly, key concepts will be defined in the following chapter, represented by social exclusion, critical social work and "empowerment". Then there will be examples of "empowerment" use from the approach point of view which focus on a change both on individual level and structural level (e.g. Fook, Mullaly, Dalrymple and Burke) and approached focused more likely on individual level of change (e.g. Goldberg and Roche). Last part of the chapter will be dedicated to selected examples of "empowerment" use within group and communitive social work from abroad and also the Czech Republic (approaches by Paul Freire, August Boal and an association Konexe).
