Air pollution has generally been recognized as a health hazard. Adverse health effects are mainly related to persistent organic pollutants. In air, they are either bound to the particulate matter or in a volatile form. Besides PAHs, there are also theirderivatives. A large amount of these derivatives comes from transformation reactions of PAHs in air. This study was focused on identification of health risks of the organic air pollution mixtures with the emphasis on genotoxicity (SOS chromotest, -S9/+S9and a dioxin toxicity (cell-line H4IIE.luc). The organic extracts of TSP and fine particles were studied. Genotoxicity was caused mainly by direct genotoxins that are bound in larger particles. Progenotoxic compounds were mainly in the fine particles. The dioxin toxicity is related mainly to PAHs. The results showed that the derivatives of PAHs were responsible for a significant part of the toxic potency of the organic air pollution. A part of them is bound in the non-respirable particle
