Formulation of functional sample on microbial-fermented product
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
As a specific result, the project has fully formulated a new environmentally acceptable lubricant (EAL) based on eco-friendly additives with examined tribological properties. Currently, the lack of new environmentally acceptable ad-ditives is limiting the development of new lubricants that can comply with new environmental protection regulations. Therefore, it is necessary to explore new sources to produce additives. The REAL project has ex-plored the potential of using microbial products such as yeast biomass Saccharomyces cerevisiae (YB) and biomass and oils extracted from Oleaginous yeast Rhodotorula toruloides (EOO). The newly formulated EAL containing these microbial additives provides friction performance comparable to that of commertial ester-based EAL.

Technické parametry
The testing of the proposed lubricants showed that at low concentrations (up to 0.5 wt%), YB exhibits a stable friction coefficient, which remains around 0.18. However, beyond this concentration, a substantial reduction in friction is observed, with the coefficient decreasing to approximately 0.13 because yeast cells can form a protective layer over surfaces, reducing metal-to-metal contact. On the other hand, the EOO additives are much more efficient due to their carboxylic acid structure, which are well known to minimize friction in moving surfaces. In this case, the CoF was reduced to 0.10.
Ekonomické parametry
As stated in the project proposal, the aim with the biobased additive formulations was the establishment of microbial-based formulations using selected microorganisms capable of producing a range of molecules that can be used as lubricants additives and not to produce a commercial lubricant product. Although the results obtained with the proposed lubricants are promising, it is not possible to establish a quantitative analysis of the economic potential of their exploitation. Entering these products into the market requires a qualification process with selected end users that will most probably take some months (e.g.: compatibility tests with seals take normally 3 months to be completed).
