Torkham Rockslide of April 18, 2023, in Pakistan: an interplay of geomorphology, geology, slope cutting, and climate
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
On April 18, 2023, a destructive rockslide occurred in Torkham townnin the North-Western Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, province of Pakistan, nalong the N-5 National Highway. The rockslide occurred earlynmorning (at about 3:50 am local time) at the Pakistan side of thenTorkham border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Thisnborder crossing is located ~ 10 km to the NW of the famous KhybernPass which was part of the medieval Silk Road trade route betweenncentral Asia and the Indian Subcontinent (Fig. 1).nTorkham is the main border crossing and trade route betweennAfghanistan and Pakistan and is very busy with people and thentrucks laden with food and other essential supplies entering andnexiting from Pakistan and Afghanistan and vice versa. The trucksnsometimes have to wait for hours to cross the border. According tonthe news reports, 120 trucks were waiting to cross from Pakistannto Afghanistan in the early hours of April 18 when the rockslidenstruck burying ~ 20 trucks and many people. Seven people werenreported dead and many injured. As a result of this rockslide, thenadministration was forced to close the Torkham border crossing.nGeologically, the Torkham Rockslide area is part of the NWnHimalaya and is prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, nlandslides, and floods. From 1992 to 2002, about 8.9 million peo-nple were affected from natural disasters in Pakistan part of thenNW Himalaya (World Disasters Report 2022). Landslides trig-ngered by earthquakes and heavy precipitation events in the NWnHimalaya cause significant loss to life and economy. For example, nout of ~ 80,000 fatalities caused by the October 8, 2005, Kashmirnearthquake (Mw 7.6) (Sana and Nath 2017), 30% were caused asna result of the landslides (Petley et al. 2005). As far as climate isnconcerned, this region falls within the subtropical climate zonenand is affected by climate change, thus, cycles of drought, inter-nmittent rainstorms and flash floods are common. Recently thenlonger-than-usual heavy monsoon and subsequent floods of 2022nclaimed more than 1739 lives, landslides and flash floods sweptnaway houses, roads, and bridges, and more than 33 million peoplenwere affected (NDMA, 2022).nTo understand the reasons that triggered the destructivenTorkham Rockslide, we have analyzed high-resolution satellite images combined with field observations and the climate data ofnPakistan for the month of April 2023.
