Im Zentrum dieser Studie steht die Praxis der Adelsverleihungen im habsburgischen Böhmen und preußischen Schlesien. Welche Ziele verfolgten die beiden Staaten mit ihrer Nobilitierungspolitik? Gewährte der Staat bestimmten Gruppen öffentliche Anerkennung,während er anderen diese verweigerte? Welche Voraussetzungen galten für die Verleihung von Adelstiteln und wie veränderten sich diese? Dieser erste systematische Vergleich der Gesellschaftsgeschichte Österreichs und Preußens zeigt, wie und warum sich die Vorstellungen von Elitenrekrutierung in beiden Staaten allmählich voneinander entfernten, und ermöglicht neue Einsichten in das Verhältnis von Staat und Gesellschaft im 19. Jahrhundert.

The book analyses the bestowment of aristocratic titles in the Habsburg Bohemia and Prussian Silesia. What goals followed both states by their ennoblements? Did they grant this highest state recognition to certain groups, while other groups were neglected? What prerequisites must have been fulfilled by the candidates and how were these prerequisites shaped during the rapid changes of the 19th century? As the first systematic comparison of Austrian and Prussian social histories in the 19th century the book reveals how and why the ideas about the role and recruitment of social elites differed in both states and offers new perspectives on the relationship between the state and civil society during the 19th century.
