Capitolul analizează activitatea politică și implicarea civică a avocaților români din Transilvania, atât în perioada în care aceștia reprezentau o minoritate etnică (la scara Ungariei dualiste), cât și în perioada în care această minoritate a devenit parte a grupului etnic majoritar (în România de după 1918). Se pornește de la ipoteza că schimbarea contextului politic general în 1918-1919 și a poziției grupului etnic din care făceau parte (adică trecerea de la „nation building” la „nation-state building”), a condus, cel mai probabil, la schimbări în modul în care avocații s-au raportat atât la politică, cât și la societatea civilă, și identifică dacă această ipotetică schimbare s-a produs, cum s-a manifestat și care sunt explicațiile asociate.

The chapter analyzes the political activity and civic involvement of the Romanian lawyers in Transylvania, both in the period when they represented an ethnic minority (on the scale of dualist Hungary) and in the period when this minority became part of the majority ethnic group (in Romania after 1918). It starts from the hypothesis that the change in the general political context in 1918-1919 and in the position of the ethnic group to which they belonged (i.e., the shift from “nation building” to “nation-state building”), most likely led to changes in the way they related to both politics and civil society, and it identifies whether this hypothetical change occurred, how it manifested itself, and what are the associated explanations.
