The aftermath of the Russian Revolution of 1917 and subsequent civil war produced one of the largest refugee situations in interwar Europe, leading to the displacement of millions from across the former Russian Empire. As these refugees settled in diverse European locales, they navigated new environments and developed complex relationships with their homeland and host societies. This workshop sought to rethink the history of refugees from the Russian Empire through a transnational lens, asking how to write it without reinforcing national or nationalist frames, and to critically explore how the history of refugees has been affected, shaped, or constrained by national master narratives and dominant historical themes.
