The relations between the bishops (later archbishops) of Prague and Bohemian princes (later kings) developed in a dynamic way over the entire Middle Ages. Even though the persons that became (arch)bishops of Prague were mostly of lower gentry origin, they had ambitions to enforce the canon law and, for this reason, often came into sharp conflicts with rulers? interests. A typical example is the canonical election of (arch)bishops, fully implemented as late as in the High Middle Ages but soon afterwardsinfringed by Luxembourg rulers.
