On appelle le XVIIIe siècle “l’âge de continuité”, car la loi de continuité en est un des fils conducteurs. La poursuite du concept même de continuité marquait déjà le destin du siècle précédent, notamment dans la création de la “nouvelle science”, dans la géométrisation galiléenne du mouvement d’un côté et dans l’établissement des lois du mouvement et du chocs des corps de Descartes de l’autre. Pour aboutir, il fallait déceler un principe plus profond capable d’englober les deux derniers développements et de rendre compte de la notion de force: ce sera la loi de continuité. Quoiqu’elle soit originaire de la conquête du continu, la pensée physique du XVIIIe siècle se développe surtout autour du désaccord de fond entre la métaphysique monadique et la mécanique newtonienne. Cet article a pour objectif de suivre le destin de la loi de continuité leibnizienne dans les considérations mathématiques, physiques et métaphysiques du XVIIIe siècle, notamment dans la querelle des forces vives et dans celle des cordes vibrantes. D’où l’on pourra identifier les trois phases de son histoire: la loi de continuité en tant que loi universelle de la géométrie et de la nature, le clivage de la loi en branches mathématique et physique, et, finalement, la loi en tant que condition a priori de la science géométrique de la nature d’une part et loi théorique d’une nature inaccessible de l’autre.

The XVIIIth century is called “the age of continuity”. The law of continuity is one of its leading ideas. The pursuit of the notion of continuity marked the destiny of the previous century, especially in the case of the “new science” rooted in the Galilean geometrization of motion on the one hand and Cartesian laws of impact on the other. The whole enterprise of the new science thus required invention of a deeper principle that might incorporate both of these roots and account for the notion of force: the law of continuity. The goal of the essay is to follow the development of the law of continuity against the background of the tension between Newtonian physics and Leibnizian metaphysics, mainly based on the example of the two most famous controversies of the century: the vis viva dispute and the vibrating string controversy.
