This chapter focuses on African civil society as a new agency in the African political arena. Despite the theoretical denial displayed by a range of Western scholars on account of Eurocentric prejudices, African civil society emerged through the ups and downs of African history. This society has been perceived sometimes as a form of anti-colonial resistance, sometimes as a quest for political pluralism and democracy. Thus, African civil society has become a kind of mandatory passage for any examin concerning the evolution of contemporary African politics. This chapter evokes political philosophies underlying articulations of this society through African history, as well as it explores their subsequent challenges.
