Offensive Expressions in Czech. Current Data and Future Research

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

My paper had two aims: (1) I presented a Czech pioneering study (Kubik 2020) involving translinguistic research on how offensive language, including slurs, is used and perceived by native speakers of Czech and French. The aim of this empirical study was to compare which types of offensive language are most used by both groups of speakers in different contexts and which expressions are perceived as most offensive. The study drew these data from a questionnaire survey (N = 200, 100 Czech / 100 French respondents). It also includes data on how offensive expressions are typically translated from Czech to French and from French to Czech. (2) I showed how I will build on these findings to design my forthcoming empirical research, which aims to map the use and reception of slurs in the Czech language. This research will focus on the use of slurs in communication between the majority society and variously defined minorities in the Czech Republic: ethnic minorities (Roma, Ukrainians, Vietnamese), groups with atypical sexual orientation, specific age groups (pensioners, young people), economically disadvantaged groups (low-income groups, homeless people).
