Appropriation through Gaps. Czech Reception of Greek Tragedy in the 19th and the Early 20th Century
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The chapter employs the concept of “gaps”, a term well-known in literary theory, to explore the formation of a coherent and linear narrative of Greek tragedy in Czech culture of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It shows which ideological assumptions typical of Czech society at the time are projected onto the three most famous representatives of Greek tragedy and, through, them onto the idea of the evolution of the tragic genre, thus forming a specifically Czech filling of the “gaps” in the narrative of Greek tragedy. The chapter also shows what emphases Czech sources chose from foreign aesthetic schemes that were widespread at the time.
