Murder by Night, Fornicate by Day. Radical Sects and Negotiating the Eucharist Heresy in Hussite Bohemia
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The study explores the complex interplay of unity, conflict, and heresiological discourse within the Hussite movement, focusing on the Eucharist as both its central tenet and its most divisive issue. Drawing on theological writings, chronicles, and polemical texts, it examines how radical Táborite thinkers such as Mikuláš Biskupec of Pelhřimov and Martin Húska constructed a vision of a chosen apocalyptic community, while simultaneously confronting internal fragmentation over the doctrine of Christ’s presence in the sacrament. The article shows that the Eucharistic controversy not only defined boundaries between Catholics and Hussites but also generated fierce disputes among Hussite factions themselves, ranging from moderate Utraquists to chiliastic radicals. It highlights how accusations of doctrinal error became inseparably intertwined with charges of social deviance, sexual immorality, and violence, as polemicists on both sides mobilised long-standing heresiological stereotypes. By analysing these strategies of denunciation, the study demonstrates how narratives of perversion and sacrilege were employed to enforce orthodoxy within Hussitism and to demonise dissenters, eventually shaping the image of Hussite radicalism in later Catholic historiography. Ultimately, it argues that the Eucharist functioned as both the symbol of reformist identity and the trigger of fratricidal conflict, revealing the fragile balance between radical innovation and the drive to preserve communal cohesion in late medieval Bohemia.
