Hussite Factionalism Seen from the Outside. Bohemian ‘Sects’ in the Understanding of Catholic Churchmen
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The Hussite movement was marked by internal divisions fueled by recurring waves of religious radicalism, beginning with the millenarist campaign of 1419–20 and the founding of Tábor. This chapter analyses the views Catholic churchmen held about various Hussite groups. Catholic observers described Hussite factionalism either through traditional heresiological frameworks linking it to past heresies or by closely analyzing the political and religious splits within Bohemia. Negotiators at the Council of Basel recognized the differences between moderate Utraquists and radical factions, using this to reach the Compactata treaty in 1433–36. However, Catholic sources portrayed sectarian fragmentation as an inherent trait of heresy. Ultimately, only moderate Hussites seeking reconciliation with the Church found partial acceptance, while radical groups remained excluded from any envisioned reintegration.
