Early archaeological and historical records of the turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) in the Czech lands

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

This chapter evaluates osteoarchaeological finds of turkey (Meleagris gallopavo), in the territory of the Czech Republic (CR), the results are analyzed alongside written historical records. A detailed list of the archaeological bone finds is not presented here as this is included in Kyselý & Meduna (2019), which also identifies the archaeological contexts and provides all relevant references, full photo-documentation of all finds, details of the methods and data used to obtain the conclusions mentioned in this chapter. The material evaluated here is dated mainly to the end of the 16th-17th centuries. The bones are from 10 locations associated with three urban centres, Prague (royal seat), Olomouc (Moravian bishopric seat), and Ivančice (the Unity of the Brethren seat), which are all some distance from one another and represent the two historical regions of the Czech lands, both being parts of the Habsburg monarchy in the studied period: Bohemia (the western part of CR, surrounded by a range of lower mountains), and Moravia (the eastern part, opened geographically to the Pannonian Basin which was largely under the control of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th-17th centuries). In total, 45 bones of turkey and a further 6 bones determined as cf. Meleagris are evaluated.
