Die Geschichte der Juden in Bayern, Böhmen und Österreich ist bisher vorrangig unter regionalen Bezügen oder aus der Perspektive der politischen Einheiten von Städten, adeligen Herrschaften, Herzogtümern und dem Königreich Böhmen erforscht worden. Kaum oder gar nicht berücksichtigt wurde dabei die große Mobilität der Juden. Im Spätmittelalter sind Juden aus Böhmen beispielsweise in Hof, Regensburg, Passau, Brünn (Mähren), Marburg/Drau, Wiener Neustadt fassbar. Umgekehrt deuten Herkunftsbezeichnungen von Juden in Böhmen auf diese Städte. Ähnliche Befunde lassen sich für Juden in Bayern und Österreich anführen. Diese prosopographischen Hinweise spiegeln Migrationen, soziale Bindungen und auch häufige Reisen wider, die zumeist durch Vertreibungen, Verfolgungen, Flucht sowie durch rechtliche Bindungen bedingt waren. Daneben konnten wirtschaftliche und persönliche Motive sowie die Lehre und Mobilität von jüdischen Gelehrten entscheidend sein. Die Konferenz beabsichtigte, die verschiedenen miteinander verbundenen Lebenswelten der Juden in Bayern, Böhmen und Österreich näher zu betrachten. Methodisch setzte sie bei den Migrationen und Beziehungen an, die auf politischen, wirtschaftlichen, gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Ebenen stattgefunden haben.

The history of the Jews in the neighboring duchies of Bavaria, Austria and the Kingdom of Bohemia has previously been investigated principally in regard to regionally limited aspects or has been examined from the perspective of the political units of the cities, noble estates, duchies and the Kingdom of Bohemia. The large-scale Jewish mobility between these areas has been given only scant attention in research, if any. In the late Middle Ages, Jews from Bohemia, for example, were demonstrably resident in Hof, Regensburg, Passau, Brünn (Moravia), Marburg/Drau, and Wiener Neustadt. Vice versa, we find that the designations of origin of Jews in Bohemia point to these cities. Similar findings can be cited for Jews in Bavaria and Austria. These prosopographical references reflect migrations, social relations and journeys that were determined by expulsions, persecution, flight and legal, economic and religious ties. In addition, other decisive factors were economic and personal motives as well as the mobility of Jewish scholars and their activity as teachers.nThe aim of the conference was to explore in greater detail the various interwoven life worlds of the Jews in Bavaria, Bohemia and Austria. Methodologically, it looked initially at migrations and relations as manifested on the political, economic, social and intellectual-religious level.
