Die Geschichte der Juden in Böhmen und Mähren lässt sich in den Quellen durchgehend etwa ab dem 11. Der Beginn der dauerhaften jüdischen Ansiedlung in Böhmen und Mähren geht auf diese Zeit zurück. Über das Zusammenleben von Juden und Christen im Mittelalter wissen wir aus den überlieferten Quellen jedoch nur sehr wenig. Ebenso spärlich sind die Belege für mittelalterliche Konversionen von Juden zum Christentum, obwohl man allgemein davon ausgeht, dass sie häufiger vorkamen, als die schriftlichen Quellen vermuten lassen. Auch die Gründe, die zu diesen Konversionen führten, sind nicht sehr klar. Konkrete Fälle waren Zwangstaufen während der Kreuzzüge oder als Folge von Pogromen gegen das jüdische Viertel, die in böhmischen und mährischen Verhältnissen im Zusammenhang mit dem Ersten Kreuzzug (1096) und insbesondere dem Pogrom in Prag 1389 verzeichnet sind. Andere Gründe für die Konversionen sind unklar. Ob es sich wirklich um eine Bekehrung zum Christentum handelte, wie viele Quellen vermuten lassen, oder ob es im Hintergrund andere, verborgene Gründe gab, die mehr über das Zusammenleben von Juden und Christen aussagen könnten, lässt sich aus den Quellen nicht rekonstruieren. Es muss jedoch nicht immer eine unmittelbare Bedrohung des Lebens gewesen sein, die wahrscheinlich der typischste und am häufigsten genannte Grund für eine Konversion im Mittelalter war. Konversionen sind in böhmischen und mährischen Quellen für die Zeit bis zu den Hussitenkriegen meist in Form von Formelsammlungen dokumentiert, deren Aussagekraft jedoch sehr fraglich ist.

The history of the Jews in Bohemia and Moravia can be traced continuously in the sources from about the 11th century onwards. The beginning of permanent Jewish settlement in Bohemia and Moravia dates back to this time. However, we know very little about the mutual coexistence of Jews and Christians in the Middle Ages from surviving sources. Equally rare is the evidence of medieval conversions of Jews to Christianity, although it is generally assumed that they occurred more frequently than written sources indicate. Nor are the reasons that led to the conversions very clear. Specific cases were forced baptisms at the time of the Crusades or as a result of pogroms against the Jewish quarter, which in Bohemian and Moravian conditions are recorded in connection with the First Crusade (1096) and especially with the pogrom in Prague in 1389. Other reasons for the conversions are unclear. Whether it was really a matter of adherence to Christianity, as many sources indicate, or whether there may have been some other hidden reasons in the background that could tell more about the coexistence of Jews and Christians, cannot be reconstructed from the sources. It may not always have been a direct threat to life, however, which was probably the most typical and previously mentioned reason for conversion in the Middle Ages. Conversions are documented in Czech and Moravian sources for the period up to the Hussite wars most often in the records of formularies, but their testimonial value is very questionable.
