Der Sammelband Monasteria abolita basiert auf einer internationalen wissenschaftlichen Konferenz, die im Oktober 2021 im Kloster Želiv stattfand. Er widmet sich der Auflösung von Klöstern und dem Umgang mit deren Besitz vom späten 18. bis zum 20. Jahrhundert. Die Beiträge beleuchten die Säkularisierungsprozesse in der Habsburgermonarchie, in Bayern und weiteren europäischen Regionen und analysieren sowohl die josephinischen Reformen als auch die Eingriffe totalitärer Regime. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Auswirkungen der Klosteraufhebungen auf das geistliche Leben, das kulturelle Erbe und die gesellschaftlichen Strukturen. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt dem Schicksal von Bibliotheken, Kunstsammlungen und Mobiliar, deren Verlagerung und neue Nutzung oft zu irreparablen kulturellen Verlusten führten. Die Studien nutzen moderne methodische Ansätze – darunter Digital Humanities – und liefern neue Erkenntnisse über die Transformation religiöser Gemeinschaften, Eigentumsrückführungen und die Identitätsbildung kirchlicher Institutionen.

The edited volume Monasteria abolita is based on an international academic conference held at Želiv Monastery in October 2021. It focuses on the dissolution of monasteries and the handling of their property from the late 18th to the 20th century. The contributions shed light on the secularisation processes in the Habsburg Monarchy, Bavaria and other European regions, analysing both the Josephine reforms and the interventions of totalitarian regimes. The focus is on the effects of the dissolution of monasteries on spiritual life, cultural heritage and social structures. Particular attention is paid to the fate of libraries, art collections and furnishings, whose relocation and new use often led to irreparable cultural losses. The studies use modern methodological approaches – including digital humanities – and provide new insights into the transformation of religious communities, property restitutions and the identity formation of ecclesiastical institutions.
