Multiproxy approach towards the complex understanding of the Germanic chiefdom societies of the Middle Danube region during the Roman Period. An outline of the research project

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The Roman Period in the Middle Danube region represents a specific geopolitical example of the wide range of Roman-barbarian interactions stemming from direct coexistence between the two distinct worlds. The low-lying regions north of the Middle Danube Limes were inhabited by Germanic populations (the presumed ‘tribes’ of Marcomanni and Quadi), as attested by a large body of archaeological evidence. Most of the archaeological research in the region has traditionally been based on the cultural-historical paradigm and, until recently, only limited attention was paid to quantitative and spatiotemporal aspects. The current project (supported by the Czech Science Foundation) aims to fill this gap. Amongst other objectives, it focuses on collecting all the relevant spatial and attribute data needed to derive representative and meaningful proxies for demographic estimates at various scales (regions– ‘key areas’, residential areas, households etc.) within the context of the Germanic chiefdom society. A further objective is to explore structural relationships and potential correlations within the social, economic or climate proxies and establish general trajectories of development within the region. Using various computational techniques, including spatial analyses, multivariate statistics, agent-based modelling and network science, it aims to evaluate the interpretative potential of the available data, validate some of the previous theoretical models and assumptions, and identify structures and regularities in various dimensions of the available data.
