Semi-rigid scale armour, was used for several centuries by the Roman army, but never adopted by any of the peoples they came into contact with. The strong association with the Roman army is further confirmed by the moment it fell out of use. The last vestiges of semi-rigid scale armour belong to the early 5th century AD and coincide more or less with the end of the Western Roman Empire. Semi-rigid scale armour appears to be an autonomous Roman variation on the more regular form that needs a base garment to ensure the integrity of the armour. While the latter was used before, during and after the Roman Empire by a wide array of peoples, semi-rigid scale armour proves to be an inherently Roman type of body armour.
