The Roman army, with its vast size, relied on hundreds of thousands of pieces of armour to protect its soldiers. These were not merely mass-produced, they demanded considerable skill to tailor them to the human body. This paper explores the techniques employed by Roman craftsmen to adapt mail and scale armour to the contours and movements of the wearer, showcasing their ingenuity and craftsmanship. Through a systematic analysis of hundreds of archaeological finds, this study examines the balance between form and function in Roman armour design. By applying the concept of chaîne opératoire, it reconstructs the decision-making processes of Roman armourers, shedding light on the methods and considerations that shaped their work. Set within the context of military communities, this exploration offers insights into the minds of the craftsmen who created and maintained these vital tools of war. It highlights their role in ensuring the functionality and adaptability of armour. Ultimately, this presentation positions Roman armour not only as a utilitarian object but also as a testament to skilled artisanship and innovative problem-solving within the Roman Empire.
