Prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in the tick Ixodes ricinus in the Styrian mountains of Austria
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Ixodes ricinus ticks (22 male, 39 female, 501 nymphs, 129 larvae) were collected from vegetation in 11 areas at altitudes between 789 m and 1350 m a.s.l. in mixed woodland with pasture land (cattle) in the Austrian province Styria, and examined for presence of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. by darkfield microscopy and real-time PCR. Prevalence rate of borreliae in ticks was 9.1% in males, 17.9% in females, 10.4% in nymphs, and 0% in larvae. The infection rate of I. ricinus collected at the highest altitude in this study, 1350 m a.s.l. (Gaberl) ? and at the same time the highest one reported to be infected in Europe ? was 11.1% in adults and 5.3% in nymphs. Twelve cultures were isolated in BSK-H medium: 8 were B. afzelii and 4 B. garini; 3 additional positive results found by PCR (negative by culture) were identified (2 B. afzelii, 1 B. garinii).
