The Encyclopedia of Tourism Management and Marketing is the definitive reference work in the field. Carefully curated by leading tourism scholar Dimitrios Buhalis, this is the largest tourism management and marketing ontology (consisting of four volumes) that has ever been put together and offers a holistic examination of this interdisciplinary field. The chapter deals with so called Energy Tourism, which involves visits by tourists to former, retired or regenerated energy sites, as well as to still operational energy sites (e.g., nuclear power plants, coal mines, geothermal plants, wind farms), where some facilities, services or activities have been developed and provided specifically for tourists’ use. Energy tourism takes place in both urban and rural spaces and it overlaps with other types of special interest tourism, such as industrial tourism, cultural and heritage tourism, adventure tourism and agritourism. Energy site tourism is one of the newer niches of special interest tourism, which is a result of the increasing diversity of interests and new tourism consumption patterns of late modern leisure society.
