Dieser Aufsatz stellt zunächst den Status magischer Glaubensvorstellungen und Praktiken in der islamischen Theologie und Sozialgeschichte vor. Daraufhin erkundet er den empirischen Kontext von Brunei und Saudi Arabien, zwei absoluten Monarchien, die ihre politische Legitimation aus ihrer Selbstdarstellung als “islamische Staaten” beziehen. Schließlich legen die Autoren dar, dass beide Regierungen und deren Geistlichkeit Hexenprozesse und einen bewusst inszenierten öffentlichen Diskurs über die weltlichen Bedrohungen durch “das Böse” dazu instrumentalisieren, ihren eigenen unersetzlichen Status als allwissende Hüter der öffentlichen Moral zu unterstreichen

This article begins by introducing the status of magical beliefs and practices in Islamic theology and social history. It then explores the empirical contexts of Brunei and Saudi Arabia, two absolute monarchies that derive political legitimation from conceptualizing themselves as “Islamic states”. Finally, the authors argue that both governments and their clergy use witchcraft prosecutions and a well-staged public discourse about the worldly threats of “evil” to underline their own irreplaceable status as panoptic guardians of public virtue
