Trends in occupational returns to education: a comparative perspective

We test the competing theories of modernization, of educational upgrading and of overeducation about trends in occupational returns to education. We use a large data set containing information on 368,804 individuals from 42 countries and estimate a series of multilevel models to predict the effects of interest. The data reveal that the upper education categories were losing occupationally, the middle education categories maintained their average occupational standing and people at the bottom improved their occupational position over time
