The essay deals with the historiography of photography and the history of research into early photography. It aims to show how much the research into the 19th century photography has differed from the following decades. Unlike the later production, the 19th century photography lures the researchers to concentrate mainly on the technical or technological aspects of the topic or on the subject-matter of individual photographs. Only rarely the researcher looks at the photography as a complex object. The main arguments are supported mostly by the examples found at the Central-European context.
