From influences to networks in art history.
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
In recent years, the network analysis, which aims to entangle the intricate social relations between actors, has been applied in art history with considerable intensity and selfevidence. Artists and their work began to be analysed as a part, or even a product, of broader social and institutional ties. Are networks in art history in danger of becoming a similarly ubiquitous and at the same time vague conceptual tool as the former „influence“? The paper will focus on the genesis of network thinking and rhetoric in art history - what are the possibilities and limits of the use of this concept and when it functions only as an impressive metaphor. Attention will also be paid to current network visualizations, which, although based on sophisticated computer programs, can quickly slip into mere spectacular symbolization. The persuasiveness of these visualizations may not come from their content, but from the visually impressive interconnectedness that connotes meanings such as „modern“, „dynamic“ or „democratic“.
