This lecture builds on Lev Manovich’s thesis that the database is a key form of cultural expression in the digital era, a way of organizing data that also shapes how we understand the world. This metaphor extends to memory—its storage, degeneration, and regeneration—where preservation relies on frequent rereading, erasure, and rewriting (Paul DeMarinis). It represents the work of Czech artist Zbyněk Baladrán, who explores similar ideas by approaching archives and databases as both material and subject. Like a „media archaeologist“, he examines cultural records—paintings, texts, films—through montage and assemblage. This method raises questions about earlier forms of information organization, such as Jiří Kolář’s mid-20th-century collages.
