L’eredità di Erwin Panofsky è segnata da profonde contraddizioni. Padre indiscusso della storia dell’arte del secolo scorso, Panofsky è stato costantemente rappresentato come l’emblema dello “studioso della torre d’avorio”, della supremazia del contenuto sulla forma, di una storia dell’arte refrattaria a dialogare con le trasformazioni artistiche e culturali del ventesimo secolo. Questo lavoro mette in discussione tale consolidato ritratto storiografico. Nel libro vengono infatti delineate prospettive critiche che ripercorrono l’interesse di Panofsky per l’arte a lui contemporanea, il cinema e la fotografia. Ne risulta un ritratto complesso, in cui le conquiste del XX secolo sono ripensate alla luce della tradizione umanistica, e il classico è sorprendentemente riattraversato dal contemporaneo, aprendo a interpretazioni che mettono in discussione non solo la ricezione tradizionale del corpus dell’autore, ma anche l’egemonia modernista nell’approccio all’arte e ai media del Novecento.

Erwin Panofsky's legacy is characterized by profound contradictions. As the undisputed father of art history of the last century, Panofsky has repeatedly been portrayed as a symbol of the ‘scholar in the ivory tower’, of the supremacy of content over form, and of an art history that refuses to engage in dialog with the artistic and cultural changes of the twentieth century. This study challenges this consolidated historiographical portrait. Indeed, the book outlines critical perspectives that trace Panofsky's interest in the art of his time, in cinema and in photography. The result is a complex portrait in which the achievements of the 20th century are reconsidered in the light of the humanist tradition and the classical is traversed by the contemporary in surprising ways, leading to interpretations that not only challenge the traditional reception of the author's work, but also question the hegemony of modernism in the treatment of 20th century art and media.
