In this paper, the authors off er an overvie w and analysis of Roman O. Jakobson?s concept of ?artifi ce and contextualize this concept within two critical traditions: functional aesthetics and sign theory. Within both traditions and through several examples the paper draws attention to certain weak points of this concept, namely the problematic assumption of the immanent character of parallelism as an artistic procedure as well as its unclear position within the Saussurean and Peircean semiological paradigms. Lastly, the concept of artifi ce is briefl y contextualized within what could be called inherent symmetricism of certain trends of 20th century literary theory.
