In akademischen und öffentlichen Debatten wird seit den 1990er Jahren zunehmend die Frage heterogener Erinnerungskulturen und daraus hervorgehender Konflikte im mitteleuropäischen und osteuropäischen Raum thematisiert. Dies hängt u. a. mit der Überwindung der Ost-West-Spaltung Europas zusammen, woraus nicht nur ein neuerWirtschaftsraum hervorging, sondern sich auch ein neuer Kultur- und Erinnerungsraum formierte. Diese Formation geht mit dem Problem einher, wie man nun mit den vielfältigen nationalen und regionalen Erinnerungskulturen umgehen soll, wie man sie aufeinander beziehen kann, ohne die divergierenden Erinnerungen einzuebnen. Kann es für die unzähligen gewaltsamen Auseinandersetzungen, sozialen und nationalen Konflikte, revolutionären Umbrüche, Kriege und ethnischen Säuberungen eine gemeinsame Erzählung und Geschichte geben, und fördert das Erzählen solcher Geschichte(n) einen gemeinsamen europäischen Erinnerungsraum? Dieser Frage wird in der vorliegenden Studie nachgegangen.

Since the 1990ies in academic and public discourses one finds the problem of heterogeneity in memory cultures and from that resulting conflicts in Central- and Eastern Europe. This heterogenity stresses the problem how to cope with the variety of differing national and regional identities, how to connect them in a productive communication without simplifying them. Will it be possible to find for all the violence, social and national conflicts a common frame for a common narrative? And will the process of narrating support the framing of a common European memory space? The studies investigate these questions.
