This paper examines translation flows between so-called peripheral languages during the long nineteenth century, challenging center–periphery models that privilege exchanges with dominant literary systems. Drawing on the framework of global and big translation history, it analyzes three interperipheral case studies: Czech–Scandinavian exchanges in Europe, translation practices in late Joseon Korea, and literary circulation between Brazil and Argentina through periodical publications. Across these contexts, the paper highlights the central role of cultural mediators, social networks, and literary magazines in enabling translation and shaping national and transnational literary fields. It argues that translation among peripheral cultures was neither marginal nor derivative, but a key mechanism in processes of nation-building, modernization, and cultural negotiation, often operating through indirect translation, strategic adaptation, and multilingual infrastructures.
