Das Ziel dieses Artikels besteht darin, dass Prager Musikmilieu vor Zachs Ankunft anhand der Lebens- und Werkgeschichte des Komponisten Johann Joseph Ignaz Brentner (1689?1742) darzustellen. Ähnlich wie die Mehrzahl weiterer böhmischer Komponisten der letzten Barock-Generation (vor allem Bohuslav Matěj Černohorský, Šimon Brixi, Wenzel Gunther Jacob oder Antonín Reichenauer) stammte Brentner nicht aus Prag. Über seine Aktivitäten ist nur sehr wenig bekannt, was für die Prager Quellenlage der Zeit ebenfalls sehr typisch ist. Dank datierten Prager Drucke von Brentners Kompositionen können Überlegungen in Bezug auf eine hypothetische Gestalt von Zachs Schaffen angestellt werden, wenn dieser Komponist der nur etwas jüngere Zeitgenosse Brentners gewesen wäre, wovon man bis vor Kurzem ausgegangen ist. Beide Komponisten können als stilistisch innovativ bezeichnet werden; wie sahen aber Brentners Kompositionsprioritäten im Vergleich zu denen Zachs aus? Schließlich ist das Werk beider Komponiste

Same as for many other Bohemian composers of the time, the stay in Prague played a significant role in the life and work of Jan Zach. Yet the influence on their work is hard to follow, partly due to the lack of sources, partly because it is often impossible to identify works composed in Prague. This article strives to provide insight into the Prague musical milieu through the work of Jan Josef Ignác Brentner, a composer one generation older than Zach. As of the mid-1710s he can be traced in Prague and some of his compositions were printed there in several collections. Among his instrumental works, there is a prevalence of concerti da camera ? 4, which show Vivaldian influence, though not in their formal patterns. Quite typically, sacred music prevailsin Brentner?s work, featuring mainly arias, very popular at the time.
