Strategies for choosing a good wife as contained in Czech proverbs about marriage
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
A large group of traditional Czech proverbs about marriage capture in a unique way the advice for choosing a good wife and the demands placed on the man looking for a match. The proverbs in which primarily the male perspective is used assess the potential bride with a view to her characteristic attributes, the value of her property, her reputation and diligence, and her physical attractiveness. Attributes that are perceived as high-risk include anything that threatens family prosperity, the smooth running of the household, the husband’s honour and his status as the head of the family. The stereotype of the good wife captured in these proverbs consists in her subordinate status to her husband on the one hand, and her relationship to the home and household chores on the other. The man, in turn, is given the role of the leader. Emphasis is placed on his maturity and responsibility, the ability to run the family and farmstead on his own is understood as the basic qualification of an adult male. In this category of proverbs, a common key feature is the readiness and eligibility for marriage and family life of both partners, in traditional culture, however, this is realized differently for men and women.
