Language biographies and management summaries revisited

This article re-examines the concept of management summaries in the field of language biography research. The starting point is primarily the work of Jiří Nekvapil (2004), who was able to show how management summaries can be used to uncover sociolinguistic norms of historical periods. In Nekvapil's case, these are norms that influence the language behavior of people of German ethnicity in the Czech Republic in the second half of the 20th century. Our focus in the following is on two aspects. On the one hand, as in Nekvapil's work, we want to uncover some collective perceptions regarding language and its development over a certain period of time and within certain groups. In Nekvapil's case, the group in question is German speakers. In our case, we focus on native English speakers who have been living in the Czech Republic since the 1990s. Secondly, we look at the form of management summaries, their collection, and their general significance as a data source, especially with regard to the individual phases of the language management process.
