The stucco decoration of the coffered dome in the Boim Chapel in Lviv

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The Boim Chapel in Lviv (also called Lord' s Passion or Gethsemani chapel), erected in 1609-1611 as a family mausoleum by Jerzy (György) Boim (†1617), a wealthy burgher of Hungarian origin, nowadays is a part of the Lviv National Art Gallery. The building is noted for its profusely decorated exterior and interior mostly executed in stone, but stucco decoration was so far identified definitely in the chapel's dome. The shrine was in use by over three centuries, most of all as funeral chapel. ln the last decades of 19th century, the drawing and photographic documentation of the chapel began, reporting also actual state of its dome. There were however just four recorded renovations of its decorations, including two, in 1838 and 1925, when also sculptures are mentioned. Only the conservation works done in the coffered dome in 1925 are well described in archival material. Little was said to the date on the stucco busts and ornaments mounted in the coffers, as well as on its material composition. New identification of figures in the lowest coffers as members of Sanhedrin trial of Jesus and iconographical prototypes for figurative images has been proposed in this paper. lnstrumental research revealed that the on-site moulded decorative elements were executed in lime mortar while for the pre-cast elements, such as stars and busts, gypsum was used. Smalt and pararealgar were detected in lower paint layers, while gold, shlag metal and artificial ultramarine in subsequent repaints.
