Understanding of materials and techniques of Baroque stuccoes and their repair
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Mortars used for stucco decoration of exteriors and especially interiors in the 17th and 18th centuries changed quite significantly composition compared to the Renaissance buildings and their plastic architectural features in the Czech territories. Stuccoes became more prominent in relief, which was made possible by the use of gypsum allowing for the firm support of various modelled shapes. The stucco decorations were carried out by craftsmen that were coming from the region of the great lakes of Como and Lugano. At the time it was an established practice with a tradition to hire an “Italian” craftsman for high-quality artistic decorations. The study focuses on the characterisation of mortars and description of individual layers used to model and build the stucco decorations and compares three different case studies executed at similar time in the last quarter and at the end of the 17th century. The aim of the study is to understand the applied materials, construction techniques and final surface finishes with regard to the conservation and repair of stucco decorations.
