Effect of the Concrete Carbonation on Durability of Framework of the Buildings

Within the research project the investigation, aimed at large sets of panel buildings, has been carried out. The observed buildings were built between 1961 and 1992 and, at present, they show critical signs of serious deterioration. The impact of aggressive atmosphere on the occurrence of failures is more than evident. The degree of carbonation of the concrete surface layer that provides corrosion passivity of reinforcement placed in pre-fabricated units has been evaluated first using a solution of theindicator phenolphthalein. In order to find out more precise data related to the negative influence of gaseous pollutants, the method of thermal analysis has been applied. The investigation of panel buildings showed that the areas affected by deterioration caused by carbonation include primarily the high industrial zone of North Bohemia region. The minimum values of carbonation depth, on the contrary, were found out in the non industrial region of Southern Bohemia, as expected
