A former open-pit coal mine in the North Bohemia in the Czech Republic is under reclamation. A small area (about 40 hectares) of side-slope is still not stable and is divided in two parts. The upper part with small inclination consists mainly of ?virgin?ground not directly affected by mining. The lower part is formed by coal overburden stripping and is partly supported by an internal waste dump. The clayey dump is up to 45 m thick in the area of interest. A 300 m long anchored pile wall has been builtas a support of the upper part of the area to prevent soil down-slope movement resulting in additional loading of the unstable waste dump below. In the lower part a huge stabilisation embankment on the internal waste dump is under construction. The wholesite is called Rabenov according to its local name. This site has been monitored since 2003 by the Czech Technical University due to its complicated geotechnical conditions and extreme heterogeneity of the original and ?man-made? ground.
