Impact of selected rejuvenators on performance-based characteristics of asphalt concrete mix with 50 % of reclaimed asphalt

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Application of increased amounts of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in asphalt mixtures is a trend, whose importance has been increasingly followed in recent years. Along with this approach it is needed to find solutions in which reactivated bitumen in reclaimed asphalt will not have negative impact on the overall durability of the mixture. The durability can be affected primarily by the rate of degradation of bituminous binder in RAP. To evaluate the effect of different rejuvenators (vegetable or oil based) on the characteristics of asphalt mixture (asphalt concrete) with RAP an ACsurf 11+ with 50 % reclaimed asphalt material was designed. For the laboratory mixtures rejuvenators Reju (newly developed Czech types), Italian additive IT and German additive ST were applied. Further, the warm-mix additive ET and industrially produced ready to use binder for high content of RAP RE were used. These additives were added in varying contents in order to verify their effectiveness on the mixture. Selected rejuvenators were applied with different content of new binder. In certain mixtures the recycled material was preheated to a lower temperature (used temperature was 130°C) in order to observe effect of this aspect of manufacturing of asphalt mixtures. The mixtures were compared to each other according to the tests commonly used in the Czech Republic. It was primarily the determination of resistance against water immersion, determination of stiffness, the wheel tracking test and assessment of behaviour in low temperature range which was under focus. The results of the laboratory study are presented in the paper.
