Interpretation and Evaluation of Procedures for Calculating the Group Refractive Index of Air by Ciddor and Hill
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Numerous errors and misinterpretations concerning the group refractive index of air are present in fields of geodesy and metrology. Many historical methods (e.g. Barrell and Sears, Edlén) are still in a frequent use even if they are considered obsolete and inaccurate from today’s perspective. The goal of this paper is to interpret and evaluate Ciddor and Hill procedures which were published in Applied Optics in 1996, 1999 and 2002. Along a simplified method, articles by Ciddor and Hill from 1996 and 1999 were recommended by the resolution of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) held in Birmingham in 1999. Since then, no updated recommendation has been published. In this article, Ciddor and Hill procedures are evaluated in terms of new findings in the field of determining the density of air. Also a short comparison of Ciddor and Hill procedures with ten other older methods is introduced. All used equations were derived from original publications. A graphical software called DRefraction was developed in order to make the calculations easily accessible. With a help of this article, a reader should be able to choose the most suitable procedure for calculating the group refractive index of air. In case of a special metrology works, a reader should be able to program the complex procedure by Ciddor and Hill recommended by the International Association of Geodesy.
