Experimental and practical experience with alternative hydraulic binders mainly in asphalt pavement cold recycling
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Recycling of asphalt pavements is a technical approach which is used and continuously developed in road construction and rehabilitation for more than 40 years. Cold recycling, especially if done in-situ, is an effective solution for rehabilitating mainly rural roads of medium to low traffic intensities. It can be used either for turning unbound layers to bound structural layers with improved performance or to overall improve bearing capacity and durability of the pavement structure. During cold recycling usually old asphalt layers together with cement bound base layers or granular base materials are milled and mixed with bituminous binders or cement (or often even both) to form a new structural layer. In the research done by the Czech Technical University in Prague continuously for more than 7 years the attention has been paid to evaluate and develop alternative hydraulic binders where waste materials or by-products can be used and usually the traditional cement can be replaced. These alternative hydraulic or alkali activated binders are based on fly ash, blast furnace slag or selected particle ranges of recyclable concrete (<2mm). Findings from experimental studies including traditional empirical as well as more advanced performance-based tests are summarized in this paper. Further, experience from a trial section where activated fly-ash from fluidized bed was used as substitute in cold recycled mixture will be shortly discussed as well.
