The paper explores the growing role of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in the field of cultural heritage conservation. Technological advances are enabling detailed 3D scanning and modelling of historic sites and the creation of digital archives that preserve cultural assets for future generations. VR enables virtual reconstructions of lost or damaged monuments, bringing history to life and making it accessible to a wider audience. Key benefits of VR include remote access to monuments, protection of originals by limiting physical visits, and the development of interactive educational content that increases user engagement. In addition, VR technology can assist in the preparation of restoration work, minimising the risk of damage to originals and increasing the efficiency of restoration. It presents specific examples of the use of VR in the conservation of monuments such as Pompeii in Italy, Notre-Dame Cathedral in France and the museum in Mosul, Iraq. These projects offer the public a way to explore cultural heritage without further degrading it, while creating an image of vanished monuments and sites. For example, the reconstruction of war-torn Warsaw through VR shows how this technology can enrich educational programmes and allow users to experience historical realities first-hand. In conclusion, VR and AR technologies have a crucial role to play in the future of cultural heritage. They not only preserve and make cultural heritage accessible, but also foster innovation and global collaboration.
