Today's standards of artifact presentation in museums of technology demand active and participatory demonstrations of all objects and systems. In the case of railway vehicles, these demands are especially hard to meet for the following reasons: Extreme weight (10-180 tons): limits the potential for active participation by museum visitors in vehicle demonstrations. Need for rails: an active demonstration requires a railway, usually not owned by the museum. Compliance with modern laws: since demonstratingthe vehicles involves transportation of people, modern railway laws need to be followed. In particular, the vehicles have to comply with strict railway-vehicle safety regulations. Explosive: the legal barriers increase even further whenever a steam locomotive is used or exhibited, because the safety regulations usually require costly periodic inspections and repairs of the boiler.
