The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is an anatomical structure separating vascular and neural brain compartments. Its proper function is essential for normal brain activity. Several neurological disorders, such as stroke, tumors and traumatic injuries can cause change of BBB permeability, thus assessment of this change during and after such disorders is required. New methodology for BBB permeability assessment is described in this paper. Our methodology is based on comparison of two consecutively recorded MRI images. Native MRI is obtained first, MRI with intravenous injected T1 contrast agent Gd-DTPA then. Pixels with significant T1 intensity change between pre and post contrast imaging are obtained using unpaired t-test. The intensity difference in these pixels represent amount of contrast (i.e. blood) in the tissue. The intensity is normalized to achieve comparability by two references. An eye ball is considered having zero contrast intensity and brain sinus maximal (one) intensity. The image segmentation techniques are used to separate observed brain tissue from other tissues beyond our interest. The image of the brain blood perfusion as a material for BBB permeability assessment is the result of our methodology.
