External textual annotations are often used for linking the visual and textual information in medical and technical illustrations. The position of the annotations around a given model is not random. There is usually a predefned boundary for positioning the annotations. The shape of the boundary can closely mimic the shape of the model, or it can be the smallest convex polygon enclosing the model, for example. However, illustrators use boundaries "somewhere in the middle". Further, the boundary might only be able to host some of the annotations for complex models. Therefore, I propose a method for solving this issue by introducing multiple possible boundaries for annotation placement. The boundaries start by mimicking the shape of the model and start to transition towards the convex hull as the distance from the models increases.
