In this chapter we deal with the interplay between tensor products of two C*-algebras and properties of states and completely positive maps. After reviewing deep results on the existence of the maximal and the minimal C*-tensor norm, we describe state spaces of the minimal and the maximal tensor product. The main part of the chapter is devoted to discussion of nuclear pairs of C*-algebras and their characterizations in terms of the weak expectation property and the local lifting property. Various equivalent forms of Kirchberg’s famous conjecture are presented. Finally, we discuss the role of the tensor products in quantum physics (composed physical systems, independence of quantum systems, Tsirelson’s problem in quantum information theory).
