In this article short introduction of development of high energy density welding methods in the former Czechoslovakia and present Czech Republic is done. The focus is on work of prof. Jiri Dunovsky at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Czech TechnicalUniversity in Prague. This history starts with design of plasma torches in years 1962-1972, then use of electron beam source from 1967 and finally first laser 1969. The lasers gradually became the most important part in the laboratory and many applications of laser welding, cutting and ablation were developed in former Czechoslovakia for electronics industry etc. After the revolution big grant project helped to establish Laser Centrum Prague, being the biggest laser application research institution in Czech Republic for many years.
