The article is focused on the impact of lighting on traffic safety and understanding of how road lighting quality influences number of crashes. Generally, public lighting has a mostly positive road safety effect. It is among other proven by accident statistics, which are part of this paper. There are a lot of methods, how these facts interpret. These methods are in the paper introduced too. Attention is also paid to impact of systems of partial switching off or dimming of road lighting. It is thus no doubt that societal losses resulting from accidents and crime outweigh the costs for the construction or maintenance and operation of public lighting network, mainly in urban areas.
